Suspended Acoustic Ceilings

Sound Absorbent Ceilings and Sound Reducing Barrier Pads

A wide range of proprietary sound absorbent ceilings can be supplied and installed, either within one of our own room structures, as part of an acoustic room upgrade or as an individual sound control solution. The sound reducing qualities of existing suspended ceilings can also be improved with the use of sound reducing barrier pads.

Suspended Ceiling Systems

For most applications, unless a client has a particular preference, or a system has been architect specified, we recommend the use of Armstrong Dune Max tiles within a conventional 600mm x 600mm suspended tee-grid. Dune Max affords excellent mid-range sound absorption, producing an estimated reverberation time of 0.60 seconds for a typical school classroom. The tile thickness is 18mm and the weight is 4.8kg/m² . The tiles provide the following sound absorption coefficients.

Sound Reducing Barrier Pads

This product provides the most economic and practical means of reducing sound breakout through suspended ceilings. The pads are ideally suited to applications where partition walls terminate at the underside or just above the ceiling, resulting in room to room sound flanking transmission. Comprising a rigid attenuating layer bonded to an acoustic foam, each pad has a nominal size of 600mm x 600mm x 16mm thick and a weight of 8.5kg/m² . The pads are pre-cut to the tile/grid size and easily installed by placing onto the back of the ceiling tile. Odd sizes or shapes are readily cut to suit on site. The following table indicates typical sound reductions via ceilings fitted with sound barrier pads, between adjacent rooms and with a separating wall terminating at ceiling height.

Alternative thicknesses are available to offer higher levels of acoustic performance, but the additional weight becomes a factor that must be carefully considered, as the grid construction may require reinforcement or additional suspension ties. Further details are available on request.

Melamine Foam Tiles

These can be a very effective, economic alternative to a full suspended ceiling. The tiles can be bonded directly to the ceiling or used to replace conventional tiles within a suspended grid. Available in a range of different profiles and thicknesses the tiles offer good sound absorption and comply with Class 0 requirements of the Building Regulations, when tested to BS476: Part 6: 1981 and Part 7: 1987. Tiles are nominally 600mm x 600mm x 50mm thick, with a nominal density of 9.5kg/m³ and provide the following sound absorption coefficients.
